Our upcoming exhibition will feature art by Anna Gerhard Arnold, Dorothy J. Badger, Leon W. LeBeau, Donna Kientz Matoes, Denise McMillan, Robert Ritter, and Denise Tomlins. These artists address the impact of the St. Lawrence River upon the local culture and geography. In this Northern region of New York State the St. Lawrence River divides two nations, yet unites them by facilitating trade, commerce, and communication. It provides shelter and life to hundreds of species of animal and plant life, enabling growth, yet at the same time the river has been powerfully destructive. Communities have thrived and played along its banks, and others still have been flooded and ruined by its waters.

Artworks explores local history through a collection of post cards on loan from Tom Snider. The post cards, featuring scenes from the town of Waddington, traces the history of the United States Post Office, photography, and the printing industry. Changes made to post card design reflected both American history and global events. These cards have always been suited as travel souvenirs, purchased by tourists as a memento of their travels or sent away to friends and loved ones as greetings from faraway destinations. Most importantly, though, this collection visually documents the town of Waddington: changes in the town’s landscape, people, and architecture.
